The International Association of Teachers of German (IDV), the Goethe-Institutes USA and AATG invite US students (high school) to participate in the International German Olympics (Internationale Deutscholympiade), taking place in July 2010 – with world-wide participation - in Germany.

Two candidates from each participating country will be invited to Hamburg to compete against each other about their knowledge and language competence regarding Germany and German.
To give everybody a chance the German Olympics will be conducted on three different levels: Basic (1-2 years of lang. ed.), Independent (3-4 years), Proficient (more than 4 years) Level.
These levels are according to the European Framework of Languages*:
Level A = Basic
Level B = Independent
Level C = Proficient
Importance will be given to team work, where the students are to deal with current cultural and political topics.

National Preliminary Round USA (Chicago November 12-13, 2009)
The Goethe-Institut Chicago will select the participants in the International German Olympics among the 12 best US candidates in a national contest taking place on November 12-13, 2009, at the Goethe-Institut Chicago.
Application for this national contest is possible by German teachers for two candidates (16 years or older) only by nomination! Thus a maximum of two candidates per school can be nominated to take part in the national contest.

Deadline for sending the application forms is September 10, 2009!
Thereupon candidates’ teachers of German will receive a short written assignment (Sept. 09) to let their students work on under survey. Results must be sent back to the Goethe-Institut Chicago, by October 5, 2009, via email to heklau@chicago.goethe.org

After that the selected candidates are informed that they will be invited to the national contest in Chicago.
Travel and accommodation expenses will be paid by the Goethe-Institut.
In the National Preliminary Round for the International German Olympics in Chicago on November 12-13, 2009 the two American participants to go to Hamburg will be selected in a two-day competition with oral and written examinations.
