Teach German Day Resources

National TEACH GERMAN Day is a nationwide celebration of the positive contributions German teachers make each day in their classrooms and communities. It aims to promote the message that teaching German is a viable and highly rewarding career choice and encourage the next generation of German teachers.  

While we will not be able to offer Teach German Day kits in 2023, here are some digital resources for you to download and use in your classroom:

Ideas for classroom activities:

  • Students can take on a #Teach10to10 challenge. They can show off their skills and spread the love of the German language by teaching 10 people 10 German words.
  • Sell German candy during the week.
  • Develop a quiz on city names in the US with German origins
  • Dress up as your favorite famous German 
  • Have the students be the teacher for the day. Put them in charge of the class for 10 minutes; they have to create a meaningful lesson on a topic of their choice with instructor pre-approval
  • Invite graduates to share how their studies of German language and culture helped them
  • Send students to local and regional high schools, junior highs, or middle schools to promote German
  • Have German students write a letter to their high school principal, superintendent, or other administrator thanking them for having a German program and talking about how their German teacher has influenced their lives
  • Contact local elementary and middle schools and ask if you can host a National TEACH GERMAN Day celebration in their school
  • Set up a booth in an area of campus where the German program might not be as widely recognized and pass out literature about being a German teacher/learning German
  • Coordinate with the music teacher at your institution to host a German music concert for all students
  • Contact local high school German programs and ask if you can be part of the National TEACH GERMAN Day celebration at their school
  • Start a chapter of the National German Honor Society
  • Get started with SPARK for German

  • Use our Canva photo templates to create your #TeachGermanDay posts! (Canva log in required)
  • Have students wear black, red and gold/yellow t-shirts or hats for Teach German Day for a great photo motif
  • Share short videos of your students interviewing you (= their German teacher) or have them share why they learn German
  • Have students make signs of their favorite German word, take pictures and add the translation/definition to your captions
  • Have students pose with our photo props
